2020年7月1日配信開始の、この夏ヒット必至のメイジー・ピータースの『Sad Girl Summer（サッド ガール サマー）』をご紹介します。
どこかボサノバ調のギターのリラックスしたリズムとキャッチーなメロディが後を引く『Sad Girl Summer』は、英ブライトン出身のポップシンガーソングライター、メイジー・ピータース（Maisie Peters）の新曲です。ちょっとスモーキーな心地よい歌声が魅力のメイジーは2000年生まれの20歳。
自身の音楽ジャンルを「Emo Girl Pop（エモガールポップ）」と呼ぶように、エモーショナルなポップソングを2015年ごろからネットで音楽を配信し続け、2017年に“Place We Were Made”シングルデビュー。今年は映画『ハーレイ・クインの華麗なる覚醒 Birds of Prey』のサウンドトラックに唯一のイギリス出身アーティストとして参加するなど躍進中。今年はヨーロッパ各地で公演が決定いるんだとか。
失恋した友達が悲しい夏を過ごさないように慰める歌詞は、ジメジメ暗いものではなく「やつの電話番号消して乾杯しましょ」的な前向きなもの。メロディーも洒落ています。PVもリモート感覚満載で、チャット越しに友達と戯れるメイジーが登場します。誰が失恋したか分からないような楽しそうなシーンが流れます。ガールズたちの楽しそうな日常を垣間見れるようなビデオは、この暗いニュースが続くご時世の鬱憤を打ち消してくれそうです。
この『Sad Girl Summer』に関してメイジーはこう述べています。
I wrote “Sad Girl Summer” at the beginning of summer 2019, which ironically went on to be one of the best summers of my life! The song is all about letting go of things and people that aren’t worth your precious time and energy, and celebrating the people in your life that are.
