22歳のスコットランド期待の新人Lewis Capaldi（ルイス・キャパルディ）。最新シングル「Someone You Loved」で、母国スコットランドはもちろん、イギリス、アメリカのヒットチャートBillboardで11月2日から首位を獲得中です。イギリスでは、今年の英ブリット・アワード批評家賞にノミネートされるなど快進撃を続けています。本作は、5月17日にリリースしたデビューアルバム「Divinely Uninspired To A Hellish Extent」に収録されています。

“I have no clue why this piano ballad has done what it’s done, I never thought we were writing a big song here. I just wrote a song and, thankfully, people seemed to like it.”

このピアノバラードが、どうしてこんな快挙を成し遂げたのかは、僕には分からない。大きなヒットを呼ぶ曲を作った認識は全然ないんだ。ただ曲を作って、ありがたいことに人々が僕の曲を気に入ってくれただけだよ

と、なかなか謙虚。まだ実家で暮らしているという彼は「印税がはいったらこれで一人暮らしができる！」と言っているそう。なんだか素朴で可愛いですね。

臓器移植に関わる2つの家族の実話が交差する、泣けると話題になったプロモーションビデオは臓器提供チャリティ団体“Live Life Give Life” とのコラボレーション。ルイスの親戚でもあり、イギリスの人気ドラマ『ドクター・フー（原題：Doctor Who）』のドクター役で有名な俳優のピーター・カパルディが出演しています。

今回、紹介するのはコラボレーションビデオではなく、ルイス本人が出演する新バージョンです。このビデオ制作に際し、ルイスは以下のように述べています。

I wanted to show another side to the song, for me the video is about the people we surround ourselves with that have the strength when we don’t and help us continue to make the right decisions in moments of fear or hardship. In the moment we often choose to ignore friends and family, thinking our judgement is better, but of course in hindsight when you’re in that headspace it’s almost impossible to make the right decisions.

この曲の別の違う側面を表現したかった。参っている時に支えてくれたり、恐怖や困難に遭遇した時に正しい方向へと導いてくれる人達を描きたかった。よく自分が正しいと思い込んで、家族や友達を無視することがあるけど、そんな状況では正しい判断を下すはほぼ不可能なんだ

2018年、フジロックフェスティバルにも出演し、その素朴な佇まいと若さに似合わない、その深みのある感情に訴えかけるような声が日本でも評判になりました。2020年1月9日に来日公演も行われます。
