節分の豆まきの習慣を英語で説明してみよう！

明日は節分。先日に引き続き節分について。

豆まきの習慣を英語でカッコよく節分を説明してみましょう！

豆まき

・Throwing roasted soybeans was first practiced in the Heian period, to stop oni from attacking Kurama villages in Kyoto by throwing beans at their eyes.
・豆まきは平安時代に鬼が鞍馬の村を襲うのを退治するために炒った大豆を鬼の目に投げたのが始まりです

・The term oni refers to an invisible negative vital power called “jaki” in Japanese.
・「鬼」とは目に見えない「邪気」を指します

・People scatter roasted soybeans both inside and outside of their houses to get rid of the oni.
・鬼を追い払うために炒った大豆を家の中と外にまきます

・These roasted soybeans are called “fukumame”.
・炒った大豆のことを「福豆」といいます

・The phrase “Out with the devil! In with good fortune,” is said when throwing soybeans.
・豆を蒔く時には「福はうち、鬼はそと」と言います

・When saying “Out with the devil!”, open a window and throw beans twice.
・「鬼はそと」と言う時は窓を開けて外に２回豆をまきます

・When saying “In with good fortune!”, throw soy beans twice inside the house.
・「福はうち」という時は部屋の中に２回豆をまきます

・Once the beans are thrown, gather them all up and eat the same number of beans as your age to keep you from sickness and stay healthy for the whole year.
・撒いた豆を拾い、歳の数と同じ数の豆を食べるとその年の1年病気にならず、健康で過ごせます

・negative vital power＝邪気
・get rid of ～＝～を追い払う
・Out with the devil＝鬼はそと
・In with good fortune＝福はうち
・keep someone from sickness＝（人）を病気から遠ざける

英語でカッコよく節分を説明してみましょう！

節分について

・February 3rd is the day of The traditional end of winter, so called “Setsubun”.
….2月2日は、冬の終わり、いわゆる節分です

・Setsubun refers to the day before the beginning of each season.
節分とは各季節が始まる日の前日を指します

・The literal meaning of the word Setsubun is “dividing the seasons”.
節分は季節を分けるという意味です

・Out of all the 4 Setsubun days, the first day of spring (Risshun) is the most special day.
….4節分の中で立春は特に重要な日です

・Back in the day, new year started on Risshun in Japan.
….昔は日本の立春から新しい年が始まりました

・Modern-day, New Year’s Eve was the Setsubun day of Risshun.
….現代の大晦日が立春の節分でした

・Setsubun signifies the ending of winter and the beginning of spring.
節分は冬の終わりと春の始まりを指します

・It is believed that oni (evil from Japanese folklore) come when the seasons change in Japan.

・There are many rituals to exorcise these oni.
